Exercise can feel like a chore, and even if you know it’s good for your health, the motivation to get moving sometimes just isn’t there.
But it doesn’t have to be a burden - by making exercise meaningful to you, it can become something fun and rewarding!
Here are five ways to make exercise more meaningful!
Making exercise meaningful is important as it helps to increase motivation and reduce stress associated with completing fitness goals.
When we focus on feeling energized, putting in a good effort, and celebrating small wins rather than stressing over the end result, we are able to build habits that stick with us even when the going gets tough.
Additionally, making exercise more meaningful can lead to improved mental health, increased serotonin levels and better overall well-being.
When exercise is meaningful and enjoyable, it's easier to keep up with our routine and helps us unlock our full potential both physically and mentally.
The best hack I can give you on making exercise meaningful is to focus on the feeling during or after your workout sessions.
Putting in a good effort rather than worrying about the outcome of your workout.
Keeping your eye on the prize and focusing on how you feel during exercise rather than the end result helps alleviate stress and anxiety associated with reaching long-term goals.
And as mentioned prior, research also shows that by exercising consistently, increases in serotonin (the "happy hormone") are produced, leading to improved mood and overall well-being.
For our Mood Lifters who use exercise to battle depression, this is the most important tip I can give you!
Setting goals is a great way to give yourself purpose when working out.
Break down big goals (like running a marathon) into small achievable chunks, and set rewards for yourself as you go along.
This way exercise can become something to look forward to instead of dreading.
Try a new activity that you have some sort of interest in.
It could be anything from rock climbing to martial arts – something that’ll get your heart pumping and allow you to have fun at the same time!
Who says exercise has to be boring?
Here's how I look at the gym:
Embracing the gym as a battleground where I confront my inner struggles has infused my exercise routine with a profound sense of purpose.
Beyond merely improving my body, I've found that the weights and machines serve as my allies in an ongoing skirmish against my depression demons.
As I push myself to conquer physical challenges, I simultaneously wage a war on the negative thoughts that attempt to hold me captive.
The gym transforms into a sanctuary, where sweat and effort become symbols of my determination to overcome obstacles, both internal and external.
In this arena of personal growth, every stride on the treadmill, every weight lifted, becomes a step towards reclaiming my mental well-being.
The echoes of my footsteps reverberate with newfound purpose, reminding me that I am not defined by my struggles, but by the courage with which I confront and conquer them.
Create something like this for yourself and have fun :)
One of the things that has helped make my exercise even more exciting is training in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.
Nothing is more motivating than having people push you further on exercises when it gets tough!
You’ll make friends, make huge progress, and even gain support which will encourage you to keep going.
And if you're lacking a group class or community with your workouts, you can join our Depression Slayers Discord here.

Hey everyone, my name is Tony and I write about living a more active lifestyle to battle depression and anxiety.
During my middle and high school years, I was an overweight, sleep-deprived, and depressed kid.
I lacked self-confidence in myself and would do things to please others, which led to people regularly walking all over me.
Because I didn’t want to be a burden on them, I would sit there and take EVERYTHING people would say about me.
